One of the featured exhibits is muralist Robert Vargas. Heroes, Booth 305. "Acclaimed Los Angeles-based muralist, Robert Vargas, will be presenting a special live art experience, entitled Heroes, honoring first responders.

Known for his powerful and dynamic large-scale works, Vargas will create a massive mural onsite at this year’s LA Art Show in a heartfelt tribute to the firefighters and first responders who continue to heroically serve the city during the recent fires and challenges.

This mural, created live during the event, is an homage to the courage, resilience, and selflessness of those who protect and serve our community. The artwork will also serve as a symbol of hope and perseverance, reflecting Los Angeles’ unwavering spirit in overcoming adversity.

“Los Angeles has faced unprecedented challenges in recent times, but through it all, our community’s strength and determination have shone through. This mural will celebrate the heroes among us and honor the resilience of our city,” said Robert Vargas.

Vargas’ mural will come to life in the heart of the LA Art Show, allowing attendees the unique opportunity to witness the creative process firsthand. The work will showcase his signature bold style while capturing the essence of unity and gratitude that defines Los Angeles."

Today November 17, 2024 was the grand opening of the new wing NHM Commons at the Natural History Museum. It was also the unveiling a the mural L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective by Barbara Carrasco. The mural was commissioned in 1981 and started in 1982. It had been shelved then put in hiding until today. An extra treat for everyone was an interview with Barbara Carrasco and Dolores Huerta at the new Commons Theater.

The mural is 16' x 80' long and is located on the second floor of the new addition NHM Commons of the Natural History Museum GPS 34.0168311574588, -118.28952093208022 . It was commissioned by the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles City in 1981. The mural depicts 51 separate true events in LA history. The events depicted included the Japanese American internment, the whitewashing of Siqueiros's mural; América Tropical, and the Zoot Suit Riots. The CRA asked Carrasco to remove 14 of the images because they depicted acts of racism against people of color. She refused and CRA cancelled the project. They later tried to destroy the mural. Carrasco won a copyright lawsuit against CRA. The mural ended up in hiding in storage at the United Farm Workers offices until more recently.
