The shooter was just named, Mainak Sarkar. He was born June 16, 1977. He was a past PhD student, lived in Indian, California, Texas and Minnesota. Turns out he killed his ex-girlfriend in Minnesota before coming to Los Angeles today. Angry young men with access to guns killing innocent people. The professor went way out of his way to help this student. He was repaid by being killed.

To the Campus Community:
I am saddened to share with you that the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has confirmed that one of the two victims in Wednesday’s tragic shooting was Professor William “Bill” S. Klug.
Our entire UCLA family is mourning the loss of Professor Klug, a respected, dedicated and caring faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Professor Klug’s wife, Mary, his two children, and his extended family, friends and colleagues. UCLA will be there for them in the difficult days and months ahead.
Professor Klug led the Klug Research Group, which focuses on theoretical and computational biomechanics. He received his master’s degree from UCLA in 1999 and his doctorate from Caltech in 2003. He joined the UCLA faculty in July 2003.
Though the path to healing is long, we will make the journey together, supporting one another along the way. Let us remember and be grateful for the wonderful gifts and talents Professor Klug shared with us at UCLA.
Sincerely,
Gene D. Block
Chancellor
