Ear Piercing Guns and Needles Cause Same Damage to Ear by Mary Cummins

We've all seen the misleading videos of a piercing gun or Studex device verses a piercing needle. They show someone pushing a dull soft tipped regular earring through rubber verses a piercing needle. The tips of piercing earrings are super sharp and pointed like a needle. They go through the skin very easily and quickly just like a needle. No fool would just shove a dull soft regular earring through their ear. That would effing hurt. Paid piercers like to show these misleading videos to scare people into using a professional paid piercer so they can make money. Don't get me wrong. There are many reasons why you'd want to use a professional piercer but the type of piercing device isn't the main issue depending on piercing type.

Scroll down for research which proves that piercing guns and needles cause the same amount of damage to the ear. They tested this on cadavers. You basically are just shoving a sharp needle through your ear. Doesn't matter how you do it. Shoving anything through flesh and cartilage will cause damage.

Piercing guns, Studex and the many other similar devices are approved by the US FDA for safety and sterility. Piercing studios like Claire's who use Studex are approved by the FDA and Health Department. Using piercing guns is totally legal and safe IF you know what you're doing. Same goes for using needles. You can get a horrible piercing from a piercing gun or needle if the operator doesn't know what they're doing. I've gotten bad piercings at Claire's and a highly recommended piercing studio because they didn't actually pierce the spot they drew on my ear. They also got it at a bad angle because they moved while piercing. On the other hand I've used Studex and a needle to pierce myself at home with 100% perfect results. I pierced my lobes, tragus, helix and nose with Studex. It's quick and painless. You just need to make sure you have it lined up perfectly before you do it and you hold the gun and your ear perfectly still while using it. I've used a needle and it hurts more than a cartridge.

Let me clear up some lies, wives tales, fallacies told by paid piercers.

1. Piercing guns can't be sterilized. You will get an infection. FALSE.

The piercing gun just holds the sterile cartridge. Most don't even use the gun. They only use the disposable sterile cartridge which is sealed, see photo below. You prep the ear by wiping it with a sterile alcohol wipe first. You should wear gloves. Proper after care will keep you from getting an infection after the piercing. You still can clean and sterilize a piercing gun holder if you want.

2. Piercing guns crush the ear with their force. FALSE.

The guns and cartridges don't crush the ear! If they did, no one would use them because it'd effing hurt. There is a stop so the cartridges don't just clamp all the way down on your ear. The needle only goes far enough through your ear to clamp down on the earring backing then it stops. The earring backing, needle length and cartridge prevent it from clamping down and crushing your ear like pliers.

I suggest people who want to use something like Studex to buy an extra one to practice with. They are reloadable, reusable but I suggest it only for practice. They are only sterile for one use. Once you use the cartridge, put the plastic pieces that break in two back together and put the piercing earring back in the gun. Then you can use it again for practice. Get one and pierce an orange peel skin the thickness of your ear. You can also pierce a piece of paper, rubber, fake ear...whatever. You can clearly see it doesn't crush anything. You can also practice so you're used to the feel of the cartridge when it releases the earring. If you are doing it yourself on your lobe or nostril, you can use one hand. If you're doing it on your tragus, use both hands for full control so you won't move.

If you look at piercing studios, many use the guns on little kids even though they use needles on adults. They do this because it's quick and pain free. Kids are more likely to move and pull away. Kids don't sit still. I use them because they're quick and painless. I've had both types of piercings so I definitely know. Using a needle which is slower hurts! Guns are instant and painless.

3. Piercing guns cause more damage and trauma than needles. They prevent healing. FALSE.

I explained this above. The research is below. Guns produce same damage as needles.

4. Piercing guns have no precision. FALSE.

This goes back to the operator. You can get a bad piercing from a gun or a needle. You need to know what you're doing or use someone who knows what they are doing. Placement and angle are important. So is actually using the gun or needle to pierce it where you drew the dot. Some piercers move when they are piercing. This is why I do my own piercings though I had a pro do my daith.

Should you use a professional piercer? Sometimes it's a very good idea to use a professional piercer to pierce your ears or other body parts with a gun or a needle. I personally believe guns should only be used with lobes, nostrils and maybe helix, tragus if you're experienced. You can't position a gun well enough to do some other piercings. You definitely can't use it with a daith, conch, contra conch, industrial, rook, snug or orbital. I'd definitely suggest using a professional for nipples, genitals and of course dermals.

If you are new to ear piercings, have odd ear anatomy, I'd use a piercing studio. They can design and curate multiple piercings for the best placement and overall effect with your anatomy. If you just want to get first or second lobes, Claire's would be good enough if you get an experienced operator.

Research which proves guns and needles cause same damage to the ear.

"Ear piercing techniques and their effect on cartilage, a histologic study

M P van Wijk 1, J A Kummer, M Kon

PMID: 17684004 DOI: 10.1016/j.bjps.2007.01.077

Abstract

Background: The popularity of high ear piercing has led to an increased incidence of perichondritis. Damage to the relatively avascular cartilage will make the ear prone to infection. The literature suggests that a piercing gun, mainly used by jewellers to pierce the lobule, may give excessive cartilaginous damage. Therefore some authors favour the piercing needle, as used in piercing studios. But until now, no comparative histological studies have been performed.

Purpose of study: To evaluate the extent of damage to ear cartilage using different piercing techniques.

Methods: Twenty-two fresh human cadaver ears were pierced using two spring loaded piercing guns (Caflon and Blomdahl), one hand force system (Studex) and a piercing needle (16G i.v. catheter). Extent of damage to the perichondrium and cartilage was quantified using a transverse section along the pin tract and compared between the different methods.

Results: The pattern of injury was similar in all techniques, showing perichondrium stripped from the cartilage around the pin tract, with most damage present on the exit site (mean length of 0.43 mm). Cartilage fractures and loose fragments were present over a mean length of 0.21 mm. No significant difference in the amount of injury between the different techniques was observed.

Conclusions: In contradiction with assumptions in the literature, all piercing methods give the same extent of damage to cartilage and perichondrium. Each method is expected to have the same risk for perichondritis, thus in the prevention of post-piercing perichondritis focus should be on other factors such as hygiene and after-care."

Today's Deportations and Mexican Repatriation from 1930's by Mary Cummins, Maria Rivera

Deportation, Mexican Repatriation, Mary Cummins, Maria Rivera, color

My grandmother was born in Mexico City in 1899. She came to the US in 1902 with her father and brothers. She became a US citizen in 1922 and married a natural born US citizen in 1928. My Nana told me about the Mexican repatriation of the 1930's. Some of her relatives who were also US citizens were sent to Mexico including their children who were born in the US.

Mary Cummins, Maria Rivera, Mexican American, US citizen, Mexico, California, Repatriation, Deportation

The repatriations frightened my grandmother. She had light olive skin, dark eyes and dark hair. She started using an old time fade cream to lighten her skin. She wore light face makeup, light gloves and light hosiery. She wore hats and used umbrellas so she wouldn't tan. She learned English at the same time she learned Spanish, French and German as a child so she didn't have an accent. Still she didn't speak Spanish outside of the house. She always only wore 100% American fashion and styles. She made sure everyone called her Mrs. Mary Cummins and never Maria Rivera.  I believe it's also the reason she married a super white blonde guy with white blue eyes which is why I'm so light. She valued light color because of the discrimination against people with darker skin, hair and eyes. She feared darker relatives being taken away.

My Nana carried all those fears and behaviors from Repatriation until the day she died at the age of 91. I was told not to speak Spanish outside of the house because she didn't want people to think I was a Mexican. She told me to stop dying my blonde hair darker. The only time I'd wear Mexican clothing was when we were in Mexico visiting relatives for the holidays. Then we could relax, speak Spanish, eat Mexican food and wear Mexican clothing.

What's happening today is another repatriation. Many US citizens are being deported. Others are leaving on their own just from the fear of being deported. The government is looking for any tiny mistake on citizenship applications to boot people out of the US. Some have lived here since they were babies. Some are married to US born citizens. Some of their children were born in the US.

During the 1930's repatriation politicians told the public that Mexicans were taking white citizen's jobs. That was the reason why Mexicans, Mexican Americans should be kicked out of the country. The real cause of the difficult economic times was of course the Great Depression. When they deported the Mexicans, Mexican Americans, the economy got even worse.

The deportations today are just like the Mexican repatriation of the 1930's. We are destroying people, their families and causing major economic hardships in the US. We're losing major consumers of US goods. US Latinos including undocumented workers purchase over 4 trillion dollars worth of US goods. They also make up most of the workforce in construction, hospitality, home care and agriculture industries. US citizens own these businesses. They're now going out of business. More US citizens are losing their jobs.

After the 1930's repatriation tanked the US economy and WWII the US had to start the Bracero program to bring Mexican workers back to the US as laborers. Will we be doing the same after these recent deportations destroy our economy? People keep getting brainwashed by corrupt politicians. We never seem to learn from history. My grandmother raised me as my mother. This is why I speak up for immigrant rights and have participated in the marches and demonstrations.

With over 1/4 million people already deported, many without due process and over 70% with no criminal record and with Border Czar Tom Homan promising to “ramp up” deportations after Labor Day in sanctuary cities.  This isn’t about policy – this is fascism.  It’s state sanctioned violence with masked federal agents, backed by U.S. soldiers – terrorizing communities forcing people to stay locked in their homes for months, afraid to go to work or school. We have protested, we have marched, we have defended our neighbors from ICE…but the terror has not stopped, and in fact it is escalating. This is an existential threat to humanity and it has to get directed to the source of this terror – the Trump Fascist Regime: The Whole Trump Fascist Regime Must Be Driven From Power!

As RefuseFascism.org’s call “The time has come for…THE FALL of the TRUMP FASCIST REGIME…” states:

“Fascism is not a looming threat. It is upon us now. Humanity’s only hope is for the decent people of this country to rise in our millions. We cannot wait for future and rigged elections. We must drive the Trump Fascist Regime from power.

“Beginning November 5, the one-year anniversary of Trump’s election, flood DC in nonviolent protest. Surround the White House. Surround the Capitol. Surround the illegitimate fascist-packed Supreme Court. Come back again and again. Across the country, refuse to comply. Every person of conscience, millions of us together, grind the machinery of the fascist regime to a halt. Don’t stop until Trump is removed.”

In The Name of Humanity – We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America

THE FASCIST TRUMP REGIME MUST GO NOW!

We will be taking Los Desaparecidos/The Disappeared art installation to Washington, DC for “The time has come for…THE FALL of the TRUMP FASCIST REGIME – Beginning November 5, 2025.”

Ted Cruz Father was Illegal Entrant, Birthright Citizenship by Mary Cummins

Ted Cruz is speaking out in support of denying birthright citizenship to children of parents who were illegal entrants. Guess who was an illegal entrant? Ted Cruz' father Rafael Cruz. Rafael admitted he had a criminal past so he couldn't get a visa to come to the US from Cuba. He was arrested in 1957 for possession of a gun. He admitted to using forged documents to come to the US in a book and on video which I have. So did Rafael's sister. This means Rafael should be deported and Ted Cruz should lose citizenship.

"Cruz’s father told NPR in an interview that posted online Thursday that he bribed a government official to stamp his passport so he could escape Cuba and enter the U.S. “A friend of the family, a lawyer friend of my father, basically bribed a Batista official to stamp my passport with an exit permit,” Rafael Cruz told NPR."

Rafael Cruz stated he was Rafael Cruz Diaz yet he used the name and birthday of Rafael Bienvenido Cruz to come to the US. I wrote about this in 2015 when Ted ran for President. The other guy's full name was Bienvenido Gregorio Cruz y Lara. That guy died in 2012.

https://marycumminsinvestigativereporter.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-mystery-of-ted-cruz-father-name.html

I did extensive genealogical research into Ted Cruz at that same time. His mother may have lost her citizenship for a few reasons.

https://marycumminsinvestigativereporter.blogspot.com/2015/12/ted-cruz-rafael-edward-cruz-rafael.html

Here's another article about Rafael Cruz' sister getting caught with forged documents coming in from Cuba.  Rafael and Sonia told this story on video when Ted Cruz was running for President! Ted thought it made a great story about his father fleeing corrupt communist Cuba and coming to free America. Rafael the preacher did a speaking tour where he told this story over and over again. In that story Rafael supported Batista then later changed sides. Per himself he was arrested for opposing the regime. Later he applied for political asylum based on this story. People in Cuba stated he was arrested for gun possession and was a Batista supporter. Who knows.

https://marycumminsinvestigativereporter.blogspot.com/2016/03/ted-cruz-aunt-sonia-real-name-lizzie.html

Based on all of this Ted Cruz' father Rafael and his Aunt Sonia should be deported instantly. Their children should lose citizenship and be deported maybe to El Salvador or South Sudan. I've written a few more articles about this in the same blog, search "Cruz." The hypocrisy of Ted Cruz is beyond belief.

FTR I don't actually want Cruz deported. I just want to show what a total hypocrite he is. I'm a Latina and was born in Los Angeles, California. My maternal family came here legally many years ago from Mexico. Both my parents were born in the US. My interest in the case was Latino genealogy.

I was tipped off to this issue by this opinion piece by Steven Lubet the Williams Memorial Professor Emeritus at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.

Cause of Camp Mystic Flooding is Poor Texas Zoning Building Regulations by Mary Cummins

UPDATE: July 12, 2025 FEMA gave exemptions for buildings in flood zones at Camp Mystic. Seems to be lack of proper oversight all the way around from FEMA, building and safety, local zoning to the camp itself. I've found this to be a common theme in Texas. They feel regulations interfere with business and profits. https://www.yahoo.com/news/fema-removed-dozens-camp-mystic-111716138.html

July 11, 2025 Owner of Camp Mystic knew about the high risk of floods yet didn't actively do anything to protect the campers. They redid Camp Mystic more recently yet didn't move the lower lying cabins built in the flood zone. They could have turned those cabins into another use and moved the campers into safer cabins on higher ground but didn't. The owner died in the flood. The camp has flooded many, many times. https://www.yahoo.com/news/camp-mystic-owner-warned-floods-101529475.html

July 9, 2025 Houston Chronicle has almost identical article to mine four days later. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/projects/2025/texas-camp-mystic-guadalupe-fema-floodplains/  I post this for the people who originally told me I was wrong about the flood zone. I've been a real estate appraiser over 42 years. I examine and research flood maps all the time to ascertain flood threat to properties and humans. I never would have signed off on an appraisal of this property for this use due to the flood map, terrain and close proximity of the cabins to the river and creek. There were even two dams on the property near some cabins and the camp had a long history of flooding. I see a lot of lawsuits against the camp.

Love this quote from the article from a Texan. This is what I've been saying for at least ten years. While I live in California I know Texas well and have relatives there. “In Texas, we have been very irresponsible about the way we treat floodways and floodplains,” said Jim Blackburn, a Rice University professor who specializes in environmental law and flooding issues. “We have always treated them as a kind of environmental red tape rather than a true danger area, and I think that has dis-served us across the board.”

July 7, 2025 A day and a half after I wrote my article CNN wrote an almost identical article using my exact same quotes. https://www.yahoo.com/news/children-camps-texas-were-located-060024551.html

ORIGINAL: July 5, 2025 intense rain and flooding at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas caused loss of life and missing campers. Everyone is blaming someone else but there is one main cause of this tragedy. The main reason is the camp was built in a high risk flood zone on the banks of the Guadalupe river in a floodplain.

The camp is built in high risk flood zone A, see map above and below. Here is the address, Camp Mystic 186 Felix Fisher Rd S, Hunt, TX 78024 GPS 30.00485531885247, -99.37327619243185. Camp Mystic itself states on their website they're built on the banks of Guadalupe river, "Established in 1926, Mystic is nestled among cypress, live oak, and pecan trees in the hill country of west-central Texas on the banks of the beautiful Guadalupe River." https://www.campmystic.com/ It looks like the cabins are built right next to the Guadalupe river. The major flooding took place as campers were asleep in bed. There actually were rain and flood warnings. Linked below is the flood map for the area. The younger girls who died were staying in the cabins closest to the water. I believe the camp owner should have evacuated the campers after the initial flood warnings the day before knowing they're in a high risk flood zone. Other camps in the area heeded the warning and evacuated. Link to the actual FEMA map https://hazards-fema.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8b0adb51996444d4879338b5529aa9cd

Better view of the cabins in Flood zone A.  You see the cabins inside the flood zone. The flood map is 48265C0450F date 03/03/2011. One should never build cabins on the banks of a river in a high risk flood zone and floodplain. They probably built the camp there because the land was cheap because it was in a flood zone. While we didn't have FEMA flood maps back in 1926 people knew which areas flooded. You could tell based on proximity to body of water, terrain and soil.

They even built dams on the creek. Were those built with permits? Texas is pretty lax with permits so rhetorical question.

Another view of the cabins near the Guadalupe River. The ones closest to the river with the lowest elevation are the ones which were destroyed and campers lost. This is an image linked from CNN which shows the yellow flooded cabins.

This is the definition of high risk flood zone A, "high risk of flooding, specifically a 1% annual chance of experiencing a flood event, also known as the 100-year floodplain. These areas are designated as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA) due to their proximity to bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and ponds." Generally you would not build a living quarter in this area. If you do, it must be mitigated which generally means raising it off the ground on a strong foundation above the BFE. "Structures in Zone A must adhere to specific building standards, such as elevating the lowest floor to or above the BFE and ensuring enclosed areas below the BFE are not used as living spaces, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers." This is a 1926 camp. I doubt it was up to flood code. The water level went six feet up inside the cabins based on the photos. They were clearly not built above the BFE. Generally you would have pier or stilt foundations so the water can flow under the buildings. I don't see any of these types of foundations in the camp.

This is the building code for flood zones in Kerr County. "A floodplain determination or permit is required for any work in the floodplain." "In Kerr County, Texas, building in Flood Zone A requires adhering to specific regulations outlined in the Kerr County Flood Damage Prevention Order. These regulations, administered by the Kerr County Engineer, aim to minimize flood damage. Generally, new construction and substantial improvements in Zone A must elevate the lowest floor (including basements) to or above the base flood elevation plus one foot, or the highest adjacent grade plus two feet if no specific depth is provided." Based on this the cabins weren't built to current code. I doubt they were 1926 original because the area had previously flooded.

Texas is known to be very lax with zoning especially when it comes to flood zones. They allow building in aqueducts, flood plains and high risk flood zones. This is a Christian religious camps so Texas probably made even more exceptions because of religion. I've previously written articles about this especially after Hurricane Harvey. This is why people are flooded over and over again and FEMA keeps paying them over and over again to rebuild. FEMA will be gone by next year so Texas needs to make some changes. Texas is lucky it has a good relationship with Trump and he agreed to declare it a disaster zone and offer assistance.

In 1987 and 1998 the Guadalupe river flooded. In the 1987 Guadalupe River flood ten teenagers drowned when trying to leave a church camp. Camp Mystic is a religious Christian camp. Perhaps the girls were swept away while fleeing the cabins. Some of the cabins are still standing though they were flooded inside with up to six feet of water. I just saw a photo of girls in pajamas walking through flood water in the middle of the night toward a building on higher ground away from the creek and river. It only takes a few inches of flood water to knock someone off their feet into the water. Maybe that is what happened to those fleeing through higher water.

Below is a chart of the water quickly rising. The water allegedly rose 20 feet in 37 minutes in the middle of the night. This happens in this area because of steep terrain, dry soil which can't soak up water and rivers and creeks flowing into each other. Texas Hill Country is also known as flash flood alley for this reason. There are steep hills, narrow valleys with lots of limestone bedrock so the water is funneled down chutes and is not absorbed into dirt and soil. Great article with quotes from a hydrologist. This is the last place you'd want to camp over night. https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-texas-hill-country-where-160717909.html

Below are photos of the cabins and cabin locations. Clearly not elevated enough. They are literally built on the bank of the river. They are built on the S part of the river and creek which is not a good idea. This area looks like a floodplain. The river banks are formed by the power of the water in the river. That means that area has most likely flooded in the past. The cabins were indeed flooded and buildings were damaged. Such a sad tragedy. In California areas that tend to flood may be used for recreation. They still don't allow overnight lodging for this reason. You can hike and have a picnic but you can't put up a tent or stay over night for this reason. Meanwhile Texas allows overnight lodging in flood zones.

This image which is from a Texas flood website illustrates floodplains and river banks. The entire floodplain area can flood. All buildings should be built above the BFE.

Los Angeles July 4th Protest, March at LA City Hall by Mary Cummins

July 4, 2025 protest and march at Los Angeles City Hall. The event began at 9:30 a.m. with live music. Speakers started around 10:00 a.m. Around 12:00 p.m. we marched from LA City Hall 200 N Spring St to the Federal Building at 300 N Los Angeles St and then to the Federal Detention Center at 535 N Alameda. A large truck led the protest with speakers standing in the back. The truck would stop every block or so for speeches and chants.

There were a few thousand people today per local news stations covering the event. The groups Ice Out of LA, 50501, @50501_socal, @ice_out_ofla , End the Occupation, Free America were there besides others. There were two stages of speakers at once for an hour or so at LA City Hall and Grand Park. They were bot on large trucks. Assembly member Isaac Bryan of the 55th district gave a great speech. There was also great live music. Wish I knew the band and singers' names but I can never find an event schedule for these events.  Found the band on the Grand Park side with 50501 Los Jornaleros del Norte. http://losjornalerosdelnorte.com/ https://www.instagram.com/losjornalerosdelnorte/ #marycummins #losangeles #california #protest #march #July4th #iceoutofla #lamuertamaria #mariaflores #catrina #mexico #mexican #immigrantrights #50501 #freeamerica

A news outlet asked who are the women dressed in the colorful dresses and what is their purpose. The women including myself are dressed as Catrinas. La Catrina is generally associated with the Mexican tradition of Dia de Muertos, Day of the Dead. La Catrina is a skeleton lady in fancy dress. While she was first conceived by Jose Posada, Diego Rivera turned La Catrina into a national symbol of Mexico.

We are dressed as Catrinas to represent our immigrant roots to support immigrant rights. Some of us carry or wear the Mexican, Guatemalan, El Salvadoran ... flag and/or colors to support immigrants. It's not because we want Mexico or Mexicans to over throw the government which is ridiculous. We're all US citizens. Many of us wore both Mexican and USA flags together to show we represent and support both nations, cultures and people.

Maria Flores aka @lamuertemaria https://www.instagram.com/lamuertemaria/ is a Los Angeles artist and designer who designed and made six of those dresses today. https://www.instagram.com/p/DLtRITwJrIl/ They were generally all standing together, see photos below. Maria is dressed as a Catrina generally with a skeleton face which represents death. Maria Flores' Catrina dresses are hand painted with political images and text, see photos below and in her linked Instagram account. Flores' dresses are her artistic political statement supporting immigrant rights and speaking out against Donald Trump, fascism and the destruction of the United States of America.

Some other women were dressed in native Mexican clothing such as Folklorico skirts, dresses, embroidered tops and were wearing Mexican sombreros, crowns or braids with colorful ribbons. I wore a Folklorico ribbon skirt with an embroidered huipil "shirt."  I also wore a flower crown with red, white and green flowers to represent the colors of Mexico because my family is from Mexico. The purpose is to show our support for immigrant rights.

Ear Piercing Guns and Needles Cause Same Damage to Ear by Mary Cummins
